HERKIMER - On Saturday, Feb. 10, the East Herkimer Sno-Riders Snowmobile Club, in conjunction with the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will be hosting the Fifth Annual Snowmobile Fun Ride for Missing & Exploited Children - "The Ride for Hope."

The purpose of the Snowmobile Ride is to honor all missing and exploited children, raise public awareness about the plight of these children, show the need for child safety education programs and raise pledge money for the poster distribution program. This year’s goal is $40,000.

Fun Day Activities

Here are Fun Day events in addition to the planned snowmobile ride:

• Music featuring "Sound Design" DJ service.
• Outhouse Races, snow or no snow.
• A bonfire.
• Ski boose rides or wagon rides.
• Karaoke.
• Tug of war.
• Ice skating (bring your skates).
• Food.
• Prize drawings
In the event of no snow, all events will go on except the snowmobile ride

"We can accomplish these goals with a large showing of snowmobiling enthusiasts and concerned persons who are committed to the cause," said Jesse Davis, president of the East Herkimer club. “The simple fact that when you gather 500-plus people at one location for a single purpose will draw attention. If you get those people to commit themselves to raising money for this great cause, we will reach our goal of $40,000.”

As an incentive for individuals to raise money for the center, for every $50 in pledges that a rider or non rider collects, they will receive one ticket towards the drawing of several great prizes including a 2007 "Blizzard" enclosed snowmobile trailer. Winning tickets will be drawn at Kast Hill Farm at approximately 4 p.m. the day of the ride.

The ride will begin at Kast Hill Farm and travel approximately 30 miles with one stop at the half-way point for a press stop and a rider break. After the break, the riders will continue the ride along a different route, which connects to the Herkimer trail. The ride will end back at Kast Hill Farm for the convenience of the riders.

A "Family Fun Day" is planned with festivities such as the famous "Outhouse Races," Tug of War, Ice Skating, Ski-Boose rides, hayrides and a Barn Dance/Karaoke with "Sound Design." A free cookout will be provided for all the participants.

The snowmobile club chose to support the Mohawk Valley Office's Poster Distribution program because it is so successful in recovering children. This local office distributes posters of missing children across the country. This year alone, the center has distributed more than 601,000 posters of 563 missing children. Due to these efforts, 241 of these children have been "successfully recovered."

There is a registration fee of $10 per rider to cover administrative costs of the event; there is no fee for riders under 16 years old. All registered riders will receive a free T-shirt, a goodie bag, refreshments and be entitled to participate in the "Fun Day" activities. Passengers (w/registered rider) will receive a goodie bag only, but may purchase a T-shirt for $10. All riders under 17 years must have had a snowmobile safety training course and present their certificate in order to drive the snowmobile.

One passenger is allowed with the registered participant.
